State of Play

A thief is fleeing through Washington DC at night and is shot dead with a silenced pistol by a man carrying a briefcase. The killer also shoots a pizza delivery man who sees the incident, who is left in a coma. The killer flees. The next day, a young woman is traveling to work, where she is killed on a platform by a subway train in an apparent suicide. Congressman Steven Collins is distraught to hear the news, as the woman was Sonya, a lead researcher on his staff. His tears on live TV lead to headlines of an affair. Congressman Collins, who has military experience, is leading an investigation into PointCorp, a private defense contractor with controversial operations involving mercenaries. Reporter Cal McAffrey is a long-time friend of Congressman Collins, and unable to go home he turns up with nowhere to go. The two discuss Sonya's death at Cal's home. Collins reveals that he had been having an affair with Sonya, and that Sonya had sent him a video message on the morning of her death which comes across as inconsistent with someone about to commit suicide. Della Frye, a colleague and fellow reporter of Cal's, originally looking into the sex scandal approaches Cal for information on his friend. The two start to work together and she discovers that Sonya's death occurred in one of only three CCTV blind spots on the metro platform. Cal believes the two shootings are related to Sonya's death and has his bag stolen by a homeless girl who is a friend of the murdered man. She gives him some photographs which the thief, a friend of hers, took out of the killer's briefcase they stole for ransom money before returning it to him showing surveillance images of Sonya talking to a well-dressed man.

Della visits the hospital where the pizza delivery man is regaining consciousness. She bumps into a man while exiting an elevator. She then sees the pizza man in his hospital bed get shot dead by an unseen sniper. Distraught, she returns to her newspaper's office and reviews CCTV footage. She notices the same man appearing on the metro platform footage and footage of the exterior of the hospital, and recognizes him as the man she bumped into in the hospital. Cal then asks a connection he has who used to work inside PointCorp to find information regarding the man. He reveals that PointCorp stands to gain 40 billion dollars annually from its mercenary activities in the United States although only 4 billion is noticed in the trial as most of the money was made from inside the US operations. Cal speaks with Congressman Collins, who shares his research findings - PointCorp is operating a near monopoly with 14 defense contractors all linking to PointCorp who supply Government surveillance and defense contracts, essentially privatizing and monopolizing United States security.

Cal's PointCorp insider later returns with the address of someone linked to the suspected assassin. Cal visits the address only to find the assassin living there, who asks his business. Terrified, Cal makes an excuse and tries to leave. Stalked by the man, Cal calls the police who arrive and force the man to disappear after shooting at Cal. Della, following a lead, finds the identity of the well-dressed man speaking to Sonya in the photographs - a PR executive working for a subsidiary of PointCorp. Cal blackmails him into talking about his activities with Sonya, their conversation secretly taped by Cal in a hotel room. He reveals she was paid generously to spy on Congressman Collins for PointCorp, but eventually didnt take the $26,000 a month as she loved Collins and was pregnant with his baby when she was killed. Cal calls Collins to show him the video - the two fall out.

Before Cal's paper goes to press, Collins turn up with his wife to go on record and presents his damning PointCorp research. After posting the story Cal notices Collins' wife knows more about Sonya than previously thought, and finds a photo of Collins with the murderer and rushes to Collins' office to speak with him. He reveals that he had been suspicious of Sonya in their relationship, and the assassin was hired by him to watch Sonya. The assassin is in fact Corporal Bingham, a former military colleague of Collins', and Collins had saved his life when he was young. He said Bingham didn't trust Sonya and killed her with no authorization from Collins. Cal goes to his car where he is confronted by Bingham in full military uniform, who says he needs to kill for a friend. Cal ducks, and federal officers shoot Bingham after his missed shot. Back at the office, Cal and Della type up their newspaper story and walk off together. The film credits roll with footage of the newspaper being printed.
