BEDTIME STORIES

Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) is a hotel handyman who was promised as a child by his father Marty (Jonathan Pryce) to be the manager of the family hotel, which was agreed to by Mr. Nottingham (Richard Griffiths) when the Bronson family reached bankruptcy and had to sell their hotel to him. When Nottingham announces plans to build a new hotel he appoints another man, the snotty Kendall (Guy Pearce) to become the manager, overshadowing Skeeter because Kendall is dating his daughter Violet.

Skeeter's sister Wendy (Courteney Cox) asks him to watch her kids, because the school at which she is the principal is being closed and she is looking for a job in Arizona. Skeeter, who had been told not to visit their home by Wendy's now-divorced husband had not gotten to know his niece and nephew Bobbi and Patrick (Laura Ann Kesling and Jonathan Morgan Heit) after some initial awkwardness, with both the kids and his day shift babysitter Jill (Keri Russell) he finally decides to settle them into bed and meets their pet guinea pig Bugsy (named because his eyes "Would look big on a cow!") as they ask him to read a story, the environmental conservative storybooks that Wendy had weren't satisfactory, so upon deciding to make his own story, he created it, wrapping around his own life as a medieval story about a squire named "Sir Fixalot" and his antagonist "Sir Buttkiss" (Kendall) during the course of the story the entranced kids make their own additions to the story, such as the king (Nottingham) giving Sir Fixalot a chance to prove himself worthy of the kingdom's crown and usurp Buttkiss' chances. During the celebration, Patrick announces that it starts raining gumballs, and the story ends at that. The following day, Skeeter is called to fix Nottingham's television which had broken and during the visit, he tells Skeeter the "secret" theme that he had announced for the hotel, which was a rock and roll theme much like that of the Hard Rock Hotel when Skeeter points this out, he is offered the opportunity to come up with a better theme, a contest to prove if he may be more right for this position against Kendall. While celebrating his luck, Skeeter suddenly is greeted with a shower of gumballs raining down from above, which was also in the story the night before. Skeeter concludes that the story that he had told to the children had come true and quickly develops a plan to use it to his advantage.

Patrick and Bobbi come over to stay at the hotel for the night. This time he elaborates a Western themed story in which he receives a free "Ferrari" red horse from an Indian chief (Rob Schneider) though the children do not corroborate the story, instead they come up with a plan to have him save a damsel in distress from a mob of criminals, which he succeeds in doing. They don't agree that he as the hero should accept a monetary reward from her and he settles merely for a kiss, only to have Patrick dream up a dwarf kicking him before he gets the kiss. After the story ends he goes out in search of his "freeeeeeeeeeeee" Ferrari and meets a man, who tricks Skeeter and steals his wallet. Violet, hounded by the Paparazzi is rescued by the passing Skeeter and just like in the story as he is about to receive a kiss from her he is kicked by a dwarfish person. From this point, he determines that its the kids' changes that affect reality and not his own. The following night, Skeeter tries to sell the kids on the theme ideas contest, but they aren't interested, and are more interested in romance and action in their stories. Skeeter comes up with a "Romaction" story in which a Greek gladiator named Skeeticus who, after impressing the emperor and a stadium of onlookers, he attracts the attention of the most beautiful maiden in the land, in his opinion, Violet Nottingham. After a meal in which all the girls who used to pick on him in High School were impressed so much by the beauty of the woman on his arm, they start randomly singing the Hokey Pokey, and saving a man's life, a rain storm sends them into a magical cave which has Abraham Lincoln in it, Skeeter loses his patience with the story and upsets the children. Unable to get them to continue, they call it a night.

The next day, Skeeter is disappointed when he learns Violet will not be meeting with him per the story design since she is flying out to Vegas for the day and unexpectedly runs into Jill who had an impulse to go to the beach and she invites him to lunch. Just like in the story, the girls from Skeeter's High School are at the restaurant he and Jill go to planning their reunion and Jill agrees to pretend to be Skeeter's girlfriend. After the girls break into the Hokey Pokey and Skeeter casually saves the life of a man on the beach, a sudden rainstorm sends them under the dock where he realizes that Jill is the most beautiful maiden and first realizes he is falling in love with her. For their final night together, Skeeter sets up the roof for their final story after enjoying some marshmallows and chocolate, Jill leaves and Skeeter continues his stories. This time telling a space themed story in which he will finally defeat Kendall. Patrick says his character can't be understood and has a cyborg modeled after his coworker Mickey (Russell Brand) after a long battle in anti-gravity, Skeeter finally wins and ends the story. But Patrick interjects that the story is too predictable and says that Skeeter is then incinerated then end the story.

At Nottingham's birthday party, among the fiery hazards that Skeeter is trying to avoid, he eats an ice cream cone with a bee in it and is stung, his swollen tongue makes him hard to understand when competing with Kendall's new Broadway themed hotel. After Mickey translates for him, Nottingham enjoys the argument and chooses Skeeter's approach over the showy approach that Kendall had provided. A panic attack on a fiery birthday cake though causes Skeeter to lose his position and he is "fired" on the spot, Putting the story's ending into effect. Afterward, Jill, Patrick and Bobbi are all upset as they learned where, until Skeeter had just discovered, the hotel was going to be built: On the property of the school which they all work and attend. Wendy believes he didn't know, but is upset because he had inadvertently taught the children there are no such things as happy endings. When they attend the demolition to protest, Skeeter is inspired to go forth and do what it takes to prevent the school becoming torn down. After offering Nottingham an alternative spot, they cannot stop the demolition as Kendall had the entire crowd turn off their cell phones. Taking Jill on a wild motorcycle ride and by chance getting his wallet back from the thief from earlier, Skeeter manages to stop the countdown and coincidentally save Bobbi and Patrick who had wandered into the school for their protest. He finally wins his story's kiss as well as saving Wendy's job (keeping her from moving away) and his niece and nephew's renewed respect in him.

Sometime later, he marries Jill and founds a hotel named after his late father. Kendall, for trying to destroy the School with Skeeter's nephew and niece inside the building isn't fired, instead he and his scheming partner Aspen (Lucy Lawless) are demoted to members of the hotel wait staff. Violet marries Mickey giving him control of the Nottingham Empire, becoming the 9th richest man alive, while Nottingham himself overcomes his fears of germs and becomes the School Nurse. In the meantime newlywed Skeeter and Jill have a baby.
